Wow!!! I could NOT put the book down!!! It just keeps getting better and better! Anthony J Melchiorri definitely outdid himself on Salvage!I can't emphasize enough that this book (this series, in fact) have all the ingredients for a great read! We have characters we care about: Dom, Meredith, Kara, Sadie, Maggie, Lauren, etc... there are the definite enemies: the Skulls... (with new and scarier variations!)... and, of course, the military... and what government is remaining... There is a lot of action! We meet new characters who add color to this unfolding story... Too, we have science used for reasons which seem to backfire and become the stuff of nightmares.
There is just so much in this story! While we have heroic people (and some not so heroic), the author keeps our cast human... their thoughts and fears are revealed as they face yet more threats. We see how the situation affects others... and that just brings US deeper into the story. We feel involved. Things happen at breakneck speed!
As usual, I won't reveal any more - it would ruin your enjoyment of this latest installment! If you like a fast paced story with the things I've mentioned earlier, then you will LOVE this book!
I am drumming my fingers impatiently for the next book!!!

There are indeed things in this world worse than flesh-eating monsters! This book is the 3rd in Melchiorri's "The Tide" series and it hit the ground running! Dom and his team discover an SOS on top of Boston Mass Gen Hospital and realize that there may be survivors that can help research and/or find an ONI agent cure/vaccine. To add to that, this particular hospital also houses research and samples necessary to further the research Dom's people have already discovered. The Hunters were successful in liberating several survivors, including a researcher (unbeknownst to them) and although the separate groups came close to being overrun on multiple occasions, the author did not take another beloved character away from us. The Droolers and Goliaths play a more prominent role in this book and Dom and his team even end up using the Droolers against other Skulls and Goliaths, which was incredibly satisfying.
While The Hunters are still deeply ensconced in the hospital mission, Fort Detrick is attacked and nearly overrun because of a betrayal recognized much too late to do anything about it. While Shepherd is whisked off at gunpoint to an unknown location, a similar situation is unfolding on the island of Kent, where Dom has been sending all survivors, including those from the Naval Academy. Dom isn't aware of all of this and accepts a mission from General Kinsey as a show of good faith and a hope to secure a facility to mass produce a cure/vaccine once one was found. Unfortunately, the mission was a setup to split up Dom's team and an attempt to try and get their hands on Meredith Webb!
The two Hunter teams barely survive the ordeal inside the NIH/VPPL, but manage to reconnect. They realized that the entire mission was a setup, but it is too late for the Huntress, as she is boarded but US Military. All communications have been cut off so Dom has no idea how his crew is faring, but at least someone had the foresight to get his daughters off the ship. No Dom just has to fight his way through Skull-infested Washington to get to them and then figure out a way to get his ship back!
This has been the most engrossing book of the series so far, as The Hunters seemed to plunge from one seemingly disastrous mission to the next! However, Dom and his Hunters proved once again how resourceful and determined they are to survive. They are tired and dirty and scared and worried about their friends, but they won't slow down until they have made it through Washington and have take back their ship!
Still having a bit of trouble keeping all of the characters straight...some more than others, but they are all growing on me. Andris is quickly becoming a favorite...and I can completely sympathize with Navid. I have a feeling he will play a bigger part in the upcoming books. I was angered at the situation the author created with the military, but not because of how it played out...because Dom refused to listen! I know what Dom was trying to do and it was indeed noble, but he has to remember that a lot of people depend on him to take care of them...and they should come first. He is too trusting and a bit too noble for this new world. I hope to see him a bit more hardened (but not so much that he doesn't want to help survivors anymore) in the upcoming books.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I love the pace and further character development along with the plot twists in book 3. No spoilers I would just say if you have read the first two books you will not be disappointed as the third is the best yet. If you have not read the series I would highly recommend starting with book 1 as this is a well worth while series to read especially if you like the Zombie Genre of books. Anthony's take on the ZA is different then anything I have read so far. His character development is great and you really find yourself loving some and hating others. Can't wait for book 4!
The stakes are higher in one of my favorite post-apoc series. Each new addition to series continues to ramp up the action and in Tide 3 we get exciting new viewpoints from another impressive character, and other surprises that I don't want to spoil. Remember the Goliaths from Tide 2? Let's just say things get even worse. Once again, Mr. Melchiorri writes with solid science and well-rounded characters. My only complaint is that Tide 4 isn't out yet!
