Captain Wentworth Home from the Sea - A Novella In 1806, Frederick Wentworth returned to the sea in the hope of leaving behind memories of Anne Elliot of Kellynch Hall. After eight years serving as the captain of the Laconia, he has failed to jettison recollections of the only woman he could ever love, that is, until a shipboard accident robs him of his memory. When he is once again thrown into Anne's company, he knows nothing of their previous engagement. With the slate wiped clean, will Anne Elliot be able to secure the love of Captain Frederick Wentworth or will all opportunities to reclaim a lost love be denied her?

I have read 18 and a half of Mary’s other books so you can see that I do like her style. I am working on the Mud Train Disaster but that is not a JAFF novel.

As we read in the book description and in other reviews this variation of JA’s Persuasion starts at the same place and time as canon. However in this tale Capt. Croft and his wife, Sophia, are also bringing with them her brother, Frederick, who has suffered a brain injury due to a rough storm at sea and being thrown into the wheel. Others have not mentioned it but this couple has now committed time and energy to Captain Wentworth’s recovery, revisiting all of the sites in his life’s history and interviewing his family and past friends so that they can fill in his missing memories. He has recovered most, if not all, facts, figures, numbers, dates, etc. but not the recognition of faces and their importance in his life. In other words his emotional attachments have not been part of that recovery. They do not know the name of the lady he fell in love with 8 years ago, although a love was mentioned in correspondence with his sister prior to her then learning of his heartbreak as his lady was persuaded to reject his proposal.

Anne is forced to stay in residence at Kellynch due to the continuing manipulations of her father and older sister, who renege on any and all their duties whenever possible and isn’t it ironic that later in the tale they are angry that Anne is not there in Bath when her father’s heir talks on and on about his interest in her.

So Anne is a part of the household but stays in the background attempting to sort out in small ways the retrenchment her father’s debts have caused…auctioning off this and that, bargaining with the tradesmen in town, etc. But Frederick has noticed from the “first” meeting how different she is from her two sisters. She is persuaded bit-by-bit by him to take walks, to go riding and to answer his questions about her past.

This story was so poignant, just so sweet in revisiting one of my favorite couples. We meet all our old acquaintances and they may have different roles: Jane, Harville’s wife remembers hearing of Anne but she isn’t telling - just making note, Lady Russell brings up the past in a bitter grapes manner (After all she was able to use her persuasion in the past so why not again?), Charles Musgrove’s failed proposal to Anne is learned of by Frederick, and Napoleon escapes Elba.

Mary Lydon Simonsen has a creative way of getting us to our happy ending. She doesn’t change our characters in drastic manners but even with Frederick having to relearn some social skills he recognizes a good women. Maybe that is just what he needs now that he is older and retired?

I do agree that I would have liked to learn a little more with maybe an epilogue: does he regain a position with the navy, does she travel with him and what about children? But it remains a good tale even with those pitfalls.

Captain Wentworth Home From the Sea edition by Mary Lydon Simonsen Romance eBooks Reviews

This doesn’t read like a finished work. I could see it as a book proposal Here are the characters and the situations that will be developed into a story. But the characters aren’t developed, there are many odd situations that aren’t explained, and there is no cohesiveness to the material that would turn it into a finished piece.

Captain Wentworth, retired from the navy due to amnesia, moves with the Crofts to Kellynch; he lacks a social filter—and needs reminders not to say just what is on his mind. Although Sir Walter and Elizabeth have moved to Bath, Anne has been left behind to deal with the handover of the property. She somehow also continues to live there and to run the household (as a substitute for the housekeeper—to whom she has granted extended leave) this situation continues for a couple of months. Wentworth, who does not recognize her or remember their past, decides to propose to her since she is a kind lady. She accepts this tepid proposal, not telling him of their past or her feelings. She deals with expected family disapproval by refusing to notify anyone of their plans.

Many characters from the original are mentioned briefly—apparently to emphasize the connection—but they aren’t really present in the book. For example, on Anne’s wedding day, Louisa Musgrove muses that she had hoped to marry Wentworth, but only very little interaction was shown between them and he had taken no interest in her at all.

Besides making Anne the de facto housekeeper, there are other situations that are improbable. My favorite is the man who went from stable boy (during Wentworth’s visit in ’06) to groom. That's perfectly feasible, but now Anne suggests that he serve Wentworth as a valet and Wentworth asks if this the man who helped serve dinner the night before (a groom acting as footman?). Career paths would not normally cross between outdoor and indoor servants. On the other hand, Anne does say he would not be appropriate to be the butler because his math skills aren’t up to the job.

I think the idea would have been fascinating if the people and the story were more fleshed out. It would also be interesting to discuss the appropriateness of a marriage to someone with amnesia. (Given that Wentworth didn’t tell anyone of his earlier engagement to Anne—including the brother he was living with at the time—it has to be at least possible that he has made other commitments that he has not yet remembered.)
